Hey Biochem!

Preseason games have started, the Habs won Monday and it’s looking to be a great NHL season!

Make the best of it by participating in the first BGSS Hockey Pool for the 2015-2016 NHL Season! Registration is open until midnight Tuesday, October 6th 2015. Participation is 5$, and those with the highest amount of points at the end of the season win money! As an added bonus, the participant with the least amount of points will get their participation reimbursed.

Research Day Abstract Booklet and Winners

Hello biochemistry students!

You may now consult the Abstract Booklet from last week’s Biochemistry Graduate Research Day! The judges for this year’s event were Drs. David Thomas, Philip Branton, Jerry Pelletier and Alain Nepveu. After two rounds of judging, the winners of the poster presentations are as follows:

1st place: Janice Reimer – Crystal structures of the initiation module of a formylating nonribosomal peptide synthetase show its elegant synthetic cycle

2nd place: Shane J. Caldwell – Antibiotic binding drives catalytic activation of aminoglycoside kinase APH(2”)-Ia

3rd and 4th place: Valerie Vinette and David Papadopoli

The first and second place winners each received a 1,500$ international travel award from the department. Congratulations!

The call for abstracts for the 3rd annual Biochemistry Graduate Research Day is now open! The event will take place Wednesday, September 23rd from 3:00pm to 7:00pm!

All undergrads, graduate students and post-docs are invited to submit their abstract for posters. You can send your abstract by September 22nd at 5:00pm to

The best posters as judged by our faculty will receive a generous travel award to present their work at an international conference. The Research day will be accompanied by a Wine and Cheese reception for New Students. Everyone is welcome!
